How to sleep when it’s hot outside

From irresistible sunrises to captivating sunsets, the days are both long and full. These are our tips on how not to get hot and bothered in bed this summer, unless you want to of course (wink).

TIP

Identify your summer sleep style

You may already have your go-to sleeping position, but in summer, all bets are off. There are four kinds of hot weather sleepers (in our humble opinion), and figuring out yours is the first step to keeping cool.

The summer sleep styles

1. One leg out

2. Quilt off, top sheet only

3. Quilt on no matter what

4. Birthday suit

If you’re a 1, 2 or 3, choose a lightweight and breathable fabric like our best-selling Eve Linen and Leo Washed Cotton collections, and don’t forget to keep the remote control for the air conditioner nearby.

If you’re a 4—impressive. Make sure the fabric your body does touch lets your skin breathe by choosing a fitted sheet that’s cool to the touch and hugs your mattress tight, for an undisturbed summer snooze.

TIP

Choose the right fabric

While there’s really no right or wrong when it comes to choosing the right bedding for you, some fabrics and weaves truly thrive when the temperature rises. Take our 100% French flax Eve Linen. Loved all year round for its softness and durability, it’s also known for its thermo-regulating properties and is our lightest bedding yet.

Always sleep on cotton? Try switching up your classic set for our most-loved Leo Washed Cotton collection. It’s stonewashed, so it feels super soft and looks lived-in from Day 1. It also has a smooth, cool handfeel and is made with a lightweight percale weave making it your bed’s best friend in summer (and all year round for hot sleepers).

Other ways to beat the heat in bed

Close the curtains

Do this first thing in the morning and keep them closed throughout the hottest parts of the day. Come evening, having blocked out most of the high summer heat your sleep space will be much cooler for it. Opening peeks for glorious golden sunsets are allowed.

Sleep with a fan

If your bedroom doesn’t already boast a ceiling fan, position a standing floor fan at the base of your bed and let the cool air lull you off to sleep.

Have a cold shower

You don’t have to be a Wim Hof disciple to reap the benefits of cold therapy. If ice baths aren’t your thing, try jumping in a cold shower right before bedtime. The cool water will help lower your body temperature and relax your muscles and mind. Not to mention washing away sweat, sunscreen, sand and any other telltale signs of summer that can disturb your sweet sleep.

Ditch the PJs

You don’t have to wait for your birthday to don the suit at bedtime. Sleeping with pajamas can trap layers of heat close to your body which can get you all hot and bothered (and not in the good way). If that sounds familiar, just ditch them. If sleeping naked feels absolutely scandalous, opt for PJs made from lightweight and breathable fabrics, like linen or cotton, in loose-fitting styles.
