How often to wash your sheets ... and other unsaid rules for the perfect bed
Caring for our bed– changing our sheets regularly, washing them well and making sure they’re stain-free and stored correctly – can go a long way in better quality of sleep and wellbeing overall. We've all been in that position where we slip into fresh sheets on Sunday night and wondered why we don't do this often enough.
So here’s to making sure we actually do that plus other important things we can do to set up a great sleep environment on repeat.
Change, as we all know, is good:
How often you change your sheets is an imperfect science. It depends on many things like what season it is, what kind of sleeper you are (sweaty, cool or nude) and how often you sleep in your bed. Sleep expert, Dr Lindsay Browning says, “we should be changing our sheets once a week, or every two weeks at the most”.
Other things to consider when setting your sheet schedule: Skin cells. Good Housekeeping says, “a person sheds on average 1.5 grams of skin each day - and that amount of dead skin can feed one million dust mites”. So the longer you go without changing or washing your sheets, the higher the chances you’ll be rolling around in more than just those pretty patterns. Still not convinced? Your dirty sheets could be contributing to body breakouts, allergies, as well as your general mental health.
Sheet care is self-care:
Once you strip your bed of used sheets, there begins step two of the operation Best Bed – proper care. Always check the care instructions for your sheets. Our Eden Cotton needs to be washed on a cool cycle and can be either tumble dried on a warm setting or hung to dry in the shade. Eve Linen on the other hand is best washed on a cool setting, and not tumble dried. Paying attention to care instructions will mean that your sheets will not just give you better cost per sleep, but might also go on to become family heirlooms. Win win.
Mend and befriend:
Finally, remember that a good night's sleep starts in the laundry. Always make sure to attend to any stains as soon as they happen – the longer you wait, the tougher they are to get rid of. We love using Dirt Refillable, plant-based, 100% biodegradable, and Australian-made, they’re a great tool to make sure your sheets stay stain-free and in mint condition.
