How often do you really need to change your quilt and pillows?

Yellow stains on your pillow. Lumps, bumps, and not-so-nice scents. Surprise zits when you’ve been sticking to a solid skincare routine. The signs are clear — it’s probably time to upgrade your quilt and pillows. Not only will a fresh set help clear your skin, boost cosiness levels, and wipe out any unwanted smells, but will also improve your overall quality of sleep. A no-brainer.

So when it comes to quilts…

Short answer? Every 5 years.

More detailed answer? While your quilt has the longest lifespan of all your bedding, it still needs to be replaced more often than you might expect. Poorer quality quilts also deteriorate faster, and might need more frequent updating.

Our LOW DOWN™️ and Cloud Corn™️ Quilts are made to last longer, with tightly woven, 100% cotton outer fabric that keeps the sustainable fill trapped inside.

Is your quilt feeling lumpy? Unpleasant smells wafting up in the early hours of the morning? Fill starting to fall out like an overly-stuffed sandwich? Yep, we think you’re in need of a cushiony, cosy upgrade.

How to properly care for your Quilt?

Sun’s out? Breeze blowing? We spy an opportunity. When the weather’s doing all the right things, take your quilt outside and air it in direct sunlight — aka nature’s laundromat. This’ll reduce the need to machine wash and dry, which can fast-track deterioration. Do this every 6-8 weeks to fully release any moisture caught in the folds.

As for machine washing and drying? Everyone’s a little different, but we recommend getting it done at least twice a year if you use a flat sheet. No flat sheet? No problem. But you will need to wash your quilt more frequently — every few months — due to more direct skin contact, which can increase sweat and skin cells clustering in your quilt.

When it comes to pillows…

Short answer? Every 2 years.

More detailed answer? Old pillows are magnets for facial oil, dead skin cells, stray hairs, and sweat. Lots and lots of sweat. These elements combined can attract dust mites, trigger allergies, and generally interrupt your ability to get a solid night’s sleep.

Feeling those lumpy bits, spotting stains, plus an influx of breakouts without a clear cause? Those are all tell-tale signs you’re due for a fresh and fluffy replacement.

How to properly care for your Pillows?

Washing your pillows every six months helps keep plumpness levels at an all-time high.

Want to keep your pillows cleaner, for longer? We strongly recommend covering your pillow in a Bed Basics Pillow Protector to help with hygiene and to keep your pillows fresh — just remember to wash them every three weeks. Your skin will thank you.
