Sleep Well with Annie Portelli

We’re stepping inside the calm, considered home of Annie Portelli, Art Director and Editorial Stylist at The Design Files. From her soothing bedroom to her sunlit living room, Annie shares how thoughtful design choices create spaces made for rest, reflection, and recharging.

Describe your bedroom. What’s the vibe you’ve created?

“Warm, simple, and cosy. It feels really calm and peaceful and helps quiet the mind.”

Does your sleep space differ from the rest of your home? If so, why?

“Yes, compared to the rest of our home, the bedroom is very minimal and tonal. Soft warm whites on walls, ceiling, and built-ins, with matching curtains and blinds, make it feel like being wrapped in a creamy haze. It wasn’t planned this way, but it quickly became a soothing little retreat.”

How do you approach curating a space that feels calming and restorative?

“I’ve visited an abundance of beautiful homes during my time as Art Director at The Design Files, and I’m always fascinated by how people create their own world within a space. I’m drawn to rooms filled with sentimental, personal pieces — little trinkets that invite you to look closer.  Not everything needs to match. The real beauty — and calm — comes from a space that reflects the person who lives there, not something straight out of a catalogue.”

Are there particular colours, textures, or pieces that make a big difference to how your space feels?

“We have big, bold moments of colour — our yellow couch, our blue kitchen. I can’t imagine them as neutrals… boring! These pops of colour make the space feel distinctive and create interest, drawing the focus from one area to another while still feeling cohesive. To balance it out, we have a lot of timber throughout the home which adds warmth, texture, and ties it all together.”

Do you have favourite spots in your home for rest, reflection, or recharging besides the bedroom?

“Our living room is very calming. I love spending time there. It's sun-kissed in the morning, and cool and calm in the evening. I often lie on the corner couch, facing the garden, and just watch the grass sway. It’s the perfect spot to switch off.”

Any tips for creating a more calming sleep environment?

“Lighting is key. Remove harsh overhead lights and use lamps or wall lights instead — it should feel candlelit. I also always sleep with an eye mask. It helps me fall asleep faster and get deeper, restorative rest, even with a baby waking me two to three times a night!”
