After hearing from more than 4,000 Australians, one thing became clear: we know rest matters, but protecting it is another story. When life gets busy, sleep is often the first thing we sacrifice. We feel guilty for slowing down, yet spend more than ever trying to switch off. We launched the 2026 Rest Report to take an honest look at how Australians are really resting, what’s getting in the way, and why rest deserves more space in our lives. Explore the key findings below and see how your own habits stack up.
Gen Z is sacrificing sleep first
28% of 18–24-year-olds say sleep is the first thing to go when life gets busy, compared with just 12% of Australians aged 55+.
Queensland is Australia's sleep-sacrificing capital
When life gets busy, 29% of Brisbane residents give up sleep first, compared with 16% of Melburnians and 17% of Sydneysiders.
Living alone makes it harder to switch off
80% of people living alone struggle to switch off mentally at night, the highest of any household type.
Parents feel the most guilty about resting
66% of parents say they always or often feel guilty when resting if they have things to do.
Doomscrolling is keeping Gen Z awake
61% of 18–24-year-olds say screen time or doomscrolling disrupts their sleep, compared with 40% of Australians aged 55+.
Poor sleep is testing our patience
58% of Australians say poor sleep makes them less patient, while 60% report a direct hit to their mood and concentration.
We’re investing more than ever in better sleep
More than 60% of Australians spend at least $100 per year on sleep-related products, including herbal teas (58%) and melatonin (40%).

Further findings from the 2026 Rest Report:
Stress and anxiety are two of our biggest sleep disruptors
67% of Australians say anxiety affects their sleep, while 66% point to stress.
Sleep technology is becoming part of the routine
27% of Australians use sleep-tracking technology in pursuit of better rest.
Caregiving is keeping parents awake
Almost 64% of couples living with children name parenting or caregiving responsibilities as a leading sleep stressor.
Across all states and age groups, over 90% of respondents say problems feel "always" or "often" more manageable after a good night's sleep.

There’s no perfect formula for better sleep. Just thoughtful foundations for the life you wake up to.
