How often should I replace my bath towels?

Nothing beats hopping out of the shower and wrapping up in a soft, fluffy towel. But even with regular washing, towels don’t last forever — over time, they lose absorbency, softness, and that fresh-clean feel. Keep reading to find out when it’s time to retire your bath sheets and towels, and treat yourself to a fresh set.

1. They feel coarse or stiff

Even the softest bathroom towels lose their plushness over time. If they’re feeling rough against your skin, it’s a clear sign they need replacing. Upgrade to a new set (might we suggest our Tommy Cotton Towels?) and thank us later. Bonus: our Tommy Towels come in a large, generous sheet size so you’re never caught short.

2. They don’t absorb as well

There’s nothing more frustrating than a non-absorbent towel. If you’re just spreading water around instead of soaking it up, it’s time for a refresh. Our Tommy Towels are super soft and highly absorbent, made in 100% natural fibres you’ll love.

3. They have an odour

A quick spritz of room spray can mask smells, but if your towels are persistently musty, they’re no longer hygienic. Time for an upgrade, stat. (Especially if you’re expecting guests any time soon.)

4. They’re falling apart

Holes, frays and loose threads are a no-go. But don’t just toss your tired towels — repurpose them as cleaning cloths to reduce waste, and replace them with a durable, long-lasting set. From striped and patterned to chic brown towels, there’s a Tommy Towel to suit every bathroom aesthetic.

5. They’ve been around for years

Even if they’re still soft, absorbent, and odour-free, towels don’t last forever. Bacteria and germs thrive in damp environments, so aim to refresh your towels every few years to keep your bathroom hygienic.

Bath towels (including sheets, bath mats, hand towels and face towels) usually need an upgrade every 2–5 years. But trust your gut — if they’re looking sad or feeling rough, it’s time for a fresh start.
